This is a tightly painted plate by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery. The piece is fully polished painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slips. The center of the plate is divided into two sections. The top has a sunset over the mesa with the stars and clouds in the sky.  Below is a large eagle tail and dragonfly design.  Surrounding the rim of the plate are classic Hopi-Tewa mountain designs.  The piece is very intricately painted with lots of thin lines.  There is a lot of color from the use of the two different clay slips.  The plate was traditionally fired with exceptional fire clouds across the surface.   It is signed on the bottom “Debbie Clashin” and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
