Cling, Alice – Jar with Stamped Cloud Designs

3.25"w x 5"h

$ 200.00

This jar by Alice Cling is one of her classic shapes.  Alice Cling is one of the great names in the revival of Navajo pottery in the 1980s. This jar is coil-built and stone polished.  This jar has a narrow base and sloping sides.  The entire piece is vertically polished.  On the sides, she has used a jewelry stamp to create the diamond-shaped cloud designs.  Take a closer look at the stamp work and you can see the little ridges you would expect to see in jewelry!  It is interesting to see how she has combined elements of Navajo jewelry with Navajo pottery!  It is a striking variation in her style.  The jar was traditionally fired outdoors and has strong colorations from black to red on the surface.  The jar was covered in pine-pitch after the firing, a continuation of the traditional Navajo pottery when the pitch was used to make the pottery utilitarian.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Alice Cling”.  Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as “Legacy of Generations.”
