This is an extraordinary large seedpot by Rache Concho (b. 1936). She learned to make pottery from her mother, Santana Cerno. She is a sister of Joseph Cerno and mother-in-law of Carolyn Lewis-Concho. In 2000 she won Best in Show at Santa Fe Indian Market. Her pottery is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slips. This large seedpot is fully painted. The top has a flower design and there are spiraling butterflies and flower designs extending downward. They are painted in an “op-art” style as they start small, get larger at the shoulder, and smaller at the base. Note how the designs overlap and flow through one another. It is quite extraordinary in the way she painted this imagery. It is signed on the bottom, “R. Concho”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. While she no longer makes pottery, one can see how pieces of this extraordinary intricacy made her a star among Acoma potters.
