Cosen, Reycita – Clay Candlesticks with Bear Handles (1970s)

5"long x 4"h each

$ 400.00

This is a creative pair of candlesticks by Reycita Cosen.  She was a daughter of potter Pasqualita Baca, a niece of Nestora Silva, and a sister of Helen Shupla. She was known for the complex carving on her pottery.  Each piece was coil built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired.  These are a complex set of candlesticks.  They each have a bear handle.  Reycita was famous for the bear handles on her pottery.  Extending out from the base (to create stability) is a kiva step or cloud shape.  The entire surface is fully polished and they have fired a dark black.  The bottom of one is signed, “Reycita Cosen” and the other is stone polished.  They are in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
