Curran, Dolores (b. 1954)
This is an intricately carve and painted box Dolores Curran. The box is deeply carved on each side. One section has a rainbow and mountain, the next clouds and rain, the third a butterfly and the final section a prayer feather. Each is deeply carved and the background area is a mica clay slip. The remainder of the box is fully polished and each section is painted with very delicate and intricate designs. Each design gets painted up to five times to get the color of the matte painted areas deep and consistent enough! Zoom in on the painting to see how complicated she has made each section. The lip is painted on the top with prayer feathers. When the lid is taken off, the underside is matte and incised with a dragonfly in the San Juan style. The dragonfly is highlighted with additional clay slips. The box is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dolores Curran”. It is definitely an exceptional piece of her pottery for the size and complicated designs!
