Curran, Dolores (b. 1954)
This is an intricately painted miniature plate by Dolores Curran. It is polished red and then painted buff-on-red. Did you know that for her painted designs, Dolores paints over the designs between four and five times? First, she has to polish the piece and then the designs are painted onto the surface. The first time is to outline the design, over the same area to deepen the outline coloration. Then the designs are filled-in and then painted over again. Finally, the entire piece is painted over one more time for consistency in color! This plate is stone polished on the front and back. In the center is a band of very thinly painted feathers. The next band outward is a band of swirling feathers! No, I”m not counting them! Along the rim is an avanyu and note the tiny clouds painted along its back. There is so much detail and precision on this piece, it is quite amazing in person. The back has two triangular cloud patterns. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Dolores Curran”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
