Curran, Ursula – Red Jar with Avanyu and Rain Designs

1.5"w x 1 1/8"h

$ 275.00

Ursula Curran is a daughter of noted potter Dolores Curran and Alvin Curran.  She is named after her grandmother, noted potter Ursulita Naranjo.  Ursula is known for her intricately painted miniature pottery.  This jar is fully polished red and intricately painted with buff clay.   Amazingly, she has to paint each piece up to five times to get the color of the matte painted areas deep and consistent enough!  The jar has a short neck and on the rim is a cloud pattern.  Below, around the neck is a very tightly painted avanyu.  Below the shoulder are feather and rain designs.  It is very intricately painted for the size!  Not only does it take multiple layers of clay to paint the designs, but all the design work must be done before firing. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Ursula Curran”.
