Dashee, Alice – Bowl with Moth Design (1997)

6"w x 4"h

$ 200.00

Alice Dahsee is from Walpi, First Mesa at Hopie and she began making pottery in 1970.  This bowl has a narrow base and sloping sides. The top has a classic moth design made famous by Grace Chapella.  There are alternating male and female moths.  Separating them are triangular designs that represent the three Hopi mesas and stars at night.  Below the shoulder are rain and cloud geometrics.  The bowl is painted with bee-weed (black) and a red clay slip.  It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There are some areas of fugitive black.  It is signed on the bottom, “Alice Dashee”.
