de la Cruz, Juan – “Coyote and Evening Star” Polychrome Water Jar

7"w x 7.5"h

$ 3,400.00

Juan de la Cruz creates complex painted polychrome pottery.  He is a son of noted potter Lois Gutierrez.  Juan is noted for his paintings and illustrations and takes his talent to the clay using all-natural clay slips to create the designs!  This water jar is truly polychrome (more than three colors of clay).  The piece tells this story:

“After Coyote’s failed attempt at flight, he had mocked Evening Star in his frustration.  In anger, Evening Star pursued him over the hills, intent on revenging himself upon Coyote for his insolence towards him.  Blue Jay happened to be on the branch of a pinon tree when Coyote supplicated h er help.  With her wings, she covered over and obscured Coyote from sight, with the warning that she would only do this once and an admonishment to not mock Evening Star again!”

The jar is painted with Coyote in a realistic style next to a more geometric Blue Bird.  Next to them can be seen a realistic portrayal of Evening Star as well as the stylized version extending out from his clothes.  The painting on this piece is exceptional!  Below the shoulder is a star pattern.  The description is written on the back of a hand-painted watercolor graphic.  His paintings are a phenomenal addition to each piece of his work.  The painting helps to better understand how exceptional Juan is with his art. The jar is signed, “Juan”.  He has won “Best of Pottery” at Gallup Ceremonials in 2017 and has been featured in articles in Cowboys & Indians Magazine and Native Art Magazine.
