Carlos Dunlap was a son of Carmelita Dunlap and a grandson of Juanita Montoya Vigil, the youngest sister of Maria Martinez.  He was a brother to Jeannie Dunlap, Cynthia Dunlap, Linda Dunlap, and Martha Appleaf Fender.   This is one of the few smaller lidded pieces we have seen of his work.  The piece is oval and painted black-on-black.  There is a rain and lightning design painted on the side and it is repeated on the lid.  The lid has a fully polished handle.  The base of the lid extends downward so that it rests inside the lid of the box, not just on top.  The entire piece is fired black.  Both the lid and the box are signed, “Carlos Sunrise Dunlap” in the clay.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
