Duwyenie, Debra – Plate with 17 Hummingbirds and Butterflies
This plate was made, polished and incised by Debra Duwyenie. The design on the front is fully polished and full of imagery. The design is a flowering plant that extends up from the base. Each of the flowers is etched into the clay and the center of each is matte, which is just where the polished slip has been etched away. For nearly every flower there is a hummingbird, each of which is also etched into the clay and with matte bellies. There are 17 hummingbirds on the plate! There are also additional butterflies. At the top edge is a rainbow design. Around the rim is a cloud and mountain pattern. The back is fully polished and etched with a water design. It was traditionally fired a deep red coloration. It is signed, “Debra” on the back.
