Duwyenie, Preston – Red Seedpot with Silver Lid

3.25"w x 3.75"h (w/ lid)

$ 700.00

Preston Duwyenie is renown for his elegant pottery which is often highlighted with silver medallions.  This seedpot is made from micaceous clay and has a micaceous clay slip on the surface.  The red is from the Santa Clara clay slip.  It has been fired red and has a very minimalist appearance with simply the mica and form working together.  The lid is made by Preston and it is cast in silver from cuttlefish bone (a type of squid!).  The lid is stylized to look like Window Rock (or even the lucky I Ching coin!).  There are the “shifting sand” designs on both sides of the lid.   The seedpot is signed on the bottom in the clay with Preston’s hallmark.  It is a woman carrying a child on her back, which is also Preston’s Hopi name, which means “carried in beauty”.  Preston is from Third Mesa at Hopi, and taught ceramics for years at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe.  He is married to pottery Debra Duwyenie and now resides at Santa Clara Pueblo.  Preston has won numerous awards for pottery, including “Best of Show” at the Heard Indian Market.
