Folwell, Susan – “At the Dance” Tile (Carl Oscar Borg)

5.5"w x 9.5"h

$ 1,100.00

This a creative tile by Susan Folwell.  She is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This piece is part of her series, “Taos Light: Pueblo Perspectives”.  Beginning in 2017, Susan Folwell began a series of clay pieces inspired by and re-interpreting the Taos Society of Artists’ work from 1915-27.  The design of this tile is inspired by cellular phones.  The piece is made from clay and carved for the relief portion of the “button” and edge of the frame.  It is inspired by a painting by Carl Oscar Borg (see the last photo).  Susan says of this piece:

“This is a series I’ve just started working on.  During this time when you can’t leave your house it is your “virtual vacation”.   Each clay tile is carved as a “cell phone” and then painted.  So far they are inspired by paintings by Buck Dunton, Carl Oscar Borg, and Burt Phillips.

The tile is beautifully painted with the figures and the sky.  The coloration of the piece is striking as well.  It is signed on the back, “Susan Folwell”.
