Folwell, Susan – “Buffalo Field” Large Open Bowl (2019)

14.75"w x 7"h

$ 2,900.00

This is a striking large open bowl by Susan Folwell.  She is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This piece is entitled, “Buffalo Field”.   It is coil built and she has incised buffalo around the shoulder.  They are carved into the clay in various depths.  The buffalo are surrounded by stars and the Folwell family “x” design.  The rim and lower shoulder are painted with petroglyph designs, from hands to stars and buffalo. This creates the visual connection of the realistic etched buffalo around the shoulder in contrast to the rock-art style below.  However, more importantly, it creates the connection of the long term impact of the buffalo on Native culture and life, through the present day.  The inside of the bowl is fully painted giving it an added depth and dimension to complement the exterior designs.  It is always striking how Susan thinks through her pottery from all angles and various perspectives.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Susan Folwell”.
