Folwell, Susan – “Dancers in Time” Tile Set

12.5"w x 13"h

$ 2,200.00

Susan Folwell is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This set of three is part of her series entitled, “Peering through Taos Light”.  The design for the tile comes from a painting by Taos Society Artist Carl Oscar Borg. The original painting is the last image.  It is a group of dancers in the center tile. They are painted looking into the modern future with a cityscape in view.  Off to the side in a smaller tile is the past, with the pueblo scene.  There is a third smaller tile with a single piece of pottery, with what might be both modern and ancient designs.  The blending of these ideas is striking in this piece.  As well, each tile has textured clay around the rim, giving them an additional feel as if they were also possible ancient.  The tiles are all set into a museum mount and they are signed on the back.

“My newest pieces serve as commentaries and reflections on the classic Taos Society of Artists Work. I specifically want to focus on their portrayal of Native Women”.  Susan Folwell
