Susan Folwell is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This bowl is part of her series for, “Taos Light: Pueblo Perspectives”.  The focus is on Susan re-interpreting the work of the Taos Society of Artists. This bowl is inspired by a painting by Victor Higgins.  Susan says of this piece:

“This piece was inspired by present-day events.  It is an open bowl that cracked while drying.  I liked the challenge of using it and thinking of the fractured state of the world with COVID.  I chose a Victor Higgins image of a woman daydreaming.  She’s in a fractured cityscape with the pueblo below her.  We also have the back which is also fractured.  It’s put back together but I had to leave some of the cracks for memory.”

It is an open bowl with the figure in the center.  Surrounded by the city design and the pueblo at her feet.  Susan has reconstructed the piece and painted it, but leaving open “fractured” areas.  It is a powerful but striking piece.  The bowl is signed on the back.

“Viewing Susan Folwell’s intricately designed pottery is like reading a book, as each piece must be turned, examined and viewed from different angles to understand the whole story.”  American Indian Art Magazine, 2005
