Folwell, Susan – Jar with Birds and Feathers (2010)

9"w x 4.5"h

$ 1,400.00

Susan Folwell continues to combine classic imagery with her own contemporary style of shape and design. This piece was made in 2010 and it is coil-built and in an interesting combination of clay slips. The top half has two tan polished birds etched into the clay.  Below them is a row of tightly etched feather designs.  The opposite side has a section slipped with clay and mica and a band of the Folwell family “x’s” as the design.  The bottom has a section of micaceous clay, but stone polished. There is another bird under the etched “x’s”. This period of Susan’s pottery was about color and texture, as much as design. The is a visual contrast between the polished, matte, and micaceous surfaces and how they reflect the light. There is also the textural aspect of the jar and how the various clay surfaces feel when the piece is held. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Susan Folwell”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
