Folwell, Susan – Large Northwest Coast Design Jar (1997)

9"w x 10"h

$ 3,000.00

Susan Folwell is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This large jar is coil built and fully polished tan.  The tan coloration is the natural color of the clay and it is just water used to polish the surface.  The top is fully etched with feathers, bird, and bear designs.  Much of the imagery is inspired by Northwest Coast design, which Susan used years ago when she lived in that area.  The designs extend down the side of the jar in a series of seven panels with bird designs.  Separating the panels, the entire surface is etched with the Folwell family “x’s”.  They are meant to symbolize stars and have become a visual cue to the work of the Folwell family.  The jar was traditionally fired and there are blushes and colorations n the surface.  The designs are highlighted with various underglaze and clay slips.  It is a visually striking and complex jar and complex and intricate in design.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Susan Folwell”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
