Folwell, Susan – “Lightning Deer” Open Bowl

11.75"w x 3.25"h

$ 2,800.00

Susan Folwell is known for her use of contemporary and creative imagery on her pottery.  This open bowl is coil-built and is an excellent form for her painted graphics. This is a bowl dynamic in color and full of symbolism. There is a deer painted in the center. The “heartlines” are painted on the sides of the deer and there is a rain cloud above the deer.  Interestingly, it is the rainbow, not the lightning, which extends through the deer.  The feet of the deer are planted on the earth with the flower motif.  The flower is beautifully painted on the surface.  The deer is leaping with the front legs extending toward the circular sun in the sky.  The burning antlers and tail represent the transition from the past to the future.  The back of the bowl reveals the natural clay color with the “water” represented with the blue coloration.  Susan’s pottery is meant to not only connect with us visually but also with touch and meant to make us think.  Her innovative style of painting and pottery forms continues to break barriers within the Pueblo pottery world.  The piece is signed on the back, “Susan Folwell”.
