Folwell, Susan – “Taos Trout” Two Piece Clay Set (Phillips)
Clay Tin: 9"long x 5"w x 4"h Clay Key: 5" long
Susan Folwell continues in her “Taos Light” series, with, “Field Days and Nocturnes”. This series is inspired by a painting by EI Couse, “Planting Prayer Plumes”. Susan said of this series:
“I wanted to imagine what E. I. Couse would have taken with him out to the filed for a day of painting. I started with the palette and painted one of his nocturnal scenes. For “Taos Trout”, I thought that out painting for the day, you would need some smoked trout. It’s “Packed in Tewa Tin” and smoked. It was a challenge to create the key and the top rolled back! The interior is a Bert Geer Phillips painting of fishing in winter. It had the colors tones and feel of the nocturnal painting by Couse and somehow seemed the perfect idea to have “fishermen painted inside the fish tin”.
This piece is amazing in concept and execution. It is slab and coil built. The exterior is fully painted and the interior has the Bert Phillips ice fishermen painting, which does work perfectly for this piece. The “key” is clay and removable. The piece is signed.
It was in 2017 that Susan Folwell began a series of clay pieces inspired by and re-interpreting the Taos Society of Artists’ work from 1915-27. She has continued to create and evolve in this series over the years.
