Gachupin, Candelaria – Plate with Zia Bird (1970s)

4.5" diameter

$ 125.00

Candelaria Gachupin was a granddaughter of noted potter Rosalea Toribio and the daughter of Maria Bridgett. She taught both her daughter Dora Tse-Pe and her son-in-law, Ralph Aragon, to make pottery.  This small plate has a Zia bird painted as the design and it is surrounded by cloud and rain designs. The body of the bird is slipped red.  We do not often see a lot of her pottery but there is always a striking appearance to her designs. This plate is signed on the back “Candelaria Gachupin, Zia Pueblo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
