Gachupin, Laura – Square Neck Jar with Angular Melon Ribs
Laura Gachupin is one of the leading potters from Jemez Pueblo. This is one of her large melon jars. The jar has a square neck and it is polished red. Around the body of the jar there are melon ribs that swirl around the piece at an angle. There are 27 rows of tan polished melon ribs, overall. The ribs are deeply carved into the clay and have a sharp edge. They are polished tan, the natural coloration of the clay. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Laura Gachupin”.
