Garcia, Jason – Clay Pueblo “Mountain Sheep Dancer” (2002) with Ribbon

8" tall

$ 475.00

This is a clay figure by Jason Garica.  He began making clay figures in the 1990s.  They were made to depict events, people, and dances at Santa Clara Pueblo.  Around 2003 he made his first clay tile and, the rest is history, as they say.  His clay figures, however, are fascinating.  They are detailed in form and dimension.  This is a Pueblo “Mountain Sheep Dancer”.  He has one knee bent, as if in the middle of a dance.  The shirt, feathers on the headdress, feathers on his feet, and sash around his waist, are all amazingly intricate in detail.  The staff he is holding is removable and it is made of wood with clay feathers on the end!  The figure is painted with native clay slips.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jason Garcia’.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It received a third-place ribbon at the 2002 Santa Fe Indian Market.
