Garcia, Jason – “Corn Maiden Dancers” Box

6"w x 6.5"h

$ 2,000.00

This box by Jason Garcia has four scenes, each painted with native clays. They depict the Corn Maiden Dancers in each scene.  Jason was inspired to create these images based on the fine line between the traditional ceremonies in the village and seeing the same dancers just off the plaza in daily activities. It’s that blend of modern and ancient which permeates each scene.  On this box, each of the grirls is on her cell phone.  One taking a photo, another texting, and the other two taking calls.  Note in the background area the kiva ladder, the church, and the TV antenna.  The TV antenna and the satellite dish are a humorous inference to “St. Clair”, the patron saint of Santa Clara village, but also televisions.  Note as well the complexity in the painted designs on each of the tablitas and the shawls. Jason continues to be one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery. .
