Garcia, Jason – “Snow Cone Maiden” Tile

4.25" x 5"

$ 400.00

This smaller tile by Jason Garcia is part of his Corn Maiden series which feature young Pueblo women in traditional dress for the Corn Dance and placing them in a modern context.  This tile has a young Corn Maiden dancer on her cell phone and holding a snow cone.  The piece is entitled, “Snow Cone Maiden”.  In the background is one of the kivas and their ladders.  Jason uses his tiles to capture moments like these, after the dances, when the participants may still be dressed but are taking a moment to catch up o their messages or partake in the festivities of Feast Day.  Of course, there is a traditional raincloud in the sky. For Jason, this is a connection to the polychrome pottery of artists such as Lela and Van Gutierrez.  The piece is made from native clay and painted with native clay slips.  It is signed with his Tewa name, Okuu Pin, which means Turtle Mountain.
