Sarah Garcia (1928-2015) was born at Laguna Pueblo to Maria Trujillo.  However, she spent her adult life at Acoma Pueblo.  She, along with Jessie Garcia, Lucy M. Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, was largely responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa designs on contemporary Acoma vessels.  This plate is stone polished and painted with bee-weed (black).  Ok, I’m not quite sure what the animal is here, but I’m going with my first guess, which is a frog…or a bird.  What is really interesting though, is to take a look at the head and how she created perspective with the two different styles of eyes.  As well, it is fascinating how she took all different Acoma designs and created her own “animal”.  There is certainly precedent for this with the animals created on Mimbres pottery in the 1100s.  The piece was traditionally fired so there are color variations on the surface.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Sarah Garcia”.
