Sarah Garcia (1928-2015) was born at Laguna Pueblo to Maria Trujillo. However, she spent her adult life at Acoma Pueblo. She, along with Jessie Garcia, Lucy M. Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, was largely responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa designs on contemporary Acoma vessels. Her daughter Goldie Hayah continues making pottery. This plate is thin-walled and painted with bee-weed (a plant). The design is a Mimbres-inspired bee. Sarah, Lucy Lewis, Anita Lowden, and others used a variety of Mimbres imagery in their pottery beginning in the 1960s. The insect is well proportioned for the size of the plate. The plate was traditionally fired outside so there are some color variations on the surface. It is signed on the bottom, “Sarah Garcia”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
