Garcia, Tina – Double Shoulder Water Jar with Bear Paws

4.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 600.00

Tina Garcia was well known for her focus on traditional shape and plainware Santa Clara pottery. This jar is a traditional shape with the round body and elongated neck. The jar has a double shoulder, which is always technically more difficult to make as it creates more opportunity for the jar to crack during drying.  As well, it creates difficult angles for to stone polish the surface to a high shine!  The jar also has two bear paws impressed into the clay.  The bear paws are a traditional design which represent the story of how a bear lead the Pueblo people to water during a drought.  Interestingly, it is always more difficult to fire a red jar than a black one!  The potter must be more careful as they fire the red pieces to avoid discoloration.  Typical of Tina’s pottery is an elegant shape and the stone polished surface is stunning.  It is signed on the bottom and  it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
