Gonzales, Rose – 12″ Tall Water Jar with Avanyu (1920s)

7"w x 12.5"h

$ 1,600.00

This is a striking tall water jar by San Ildefonso potter Rose Gonzales.  She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted, and carved pottery.  This jar is thin-walled and very lightweight.  The entire piece is fully polished and there is a cloud design around the neck.  The avanyu has a rounded horn and the tongue is in the shape of the avanyu design seen on early San Ildefonso pottery (see last photo).  The piece was fired with some gunmetal coloration. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Rose” and it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Definitely a create piece by this important San Ildefonso potter!
