Gonzales, Rose – Large Jar with Carved Avanyu (1970’s)

7"w x 9"h

$ 1,400.00

This is a striking larger jar by Rose Gonzales.  She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted and carved pottery.  This jar is her signature shape and design. The high shoulder allows for space for her cameo style carving.  There is a water serpent (avanyu) carved into the shoulder of the jar.  Note the circle for the eye, which was how she carved her pieces.  The jar is highly polished and fired a deep black.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Rose” on the bottom in the clay.
