Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery.  However, she also made painted pottery during the course of her career.  This is one of her distinctive redware pieces.  The bowl is fully polished with no design.  While simple, there is an elegance to the form and it has a great coloration from the firing.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair, but a few light surface scratches near the base.  Rose’s legacy can certainly be seen in the work of Tse-Pe, Dora Tse-Pe, and Russell Sanchez.
