Gonzales, Rose – Red Canteen with Ribbon (1965)

8"w x 7.5"h x 3.5" deep

$ 1,300.00

This canteen is a classic piece by San Ildefonso potter Rose Gonzales.  She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted and carved pottery.  This canteen is her classic shape for this form.  It is fully polished red with no design.  It still has the original leather strap and wood stopper!  The canteen won a second place at the 1965 Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonials.  The piece is signed on the back in the clay, “Rose”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  The canteen has a metal museum mount made for it, which creates a striking presentation.
