Gonzales, Rose – Red Plate with Thunderbird

11" diameter

$ 1,600.00

Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery.  This is an early piece of her carved pottery from the 1940’s-50’s and one of the few red plates we have had.  The piece is carved with a Thunderbird which fills most of the space and has cloud patterns on the side.  The carving is Rose’s cameo style which is not as deep as some other potters.  The design is complicated and fully fits the shape of the plate. The back is polished and signed in the clay, “Rose”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Rose’s legacy an certainly be seen in the work of Tse-Pe, Dora Tse-Pe and Russell Sanchez.
