This is a striking water jar by Rose Gonzales. She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. This piece is coil-built, stone polished, and painted. The shape of the jar is iconic for Rose with a sharp shoulder and elongated neck. The jar is painted with a rain and cloud pattern. Note how she uses the negative space of the highly polished jar to accentuate the imagery. The jar was traditionally fired a glassy black. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose”. The jar has a First Place Ribbon from the 1970 Gallup Ceremonials. Rose’s legacy can certainly be seen in the work of Tse-Pe, Dora Tse-Pe and Russell Sanchez.
