Gutierrez, Denny – Gourd and Melon Jar (1991)
Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls. This piece is a combination of the gourd and melon designs. The area above the shoulder is impressed or indented with the circular gourd design. It is the rounded sections of gourds which potters use to smooth out their pottery while they are making the piece. On this piece, they are very lightly indented. There are six gourd sections on the bowl. Much like his swirling faceted melons, the gourds are about creating angles to reflect the light. Below the shoulder are the straight faceted melon ribs. There are16 of the ribs encircling the piece. It is a very complex piece for the size. The jar is from 1991. It is very highly polished and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”. Shipping is included.
