Gutierrez, Denny – Large Red Jar with Feather Design (1987)
Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls. However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This is one of his few redware pieces. The jar is fully polished red and painted with a matte creme colored slip. The designs are a VERY tightly painted feather pattern. Note how he painted his feathers. They are at a slight angle swirling around the jar. As well, above the feathers are four sections with rain patterns. It is a style that is distinctive to his pottery. The jar is from 1987, so very early in his career. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
