Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls.  However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This is one of his few redware pieces.  The jar is fully polished red and painted with a matte creme colored slip. The designs is a VERY tightly painted feather pattern.  Note how he painted his feathers.  They are at a slight angle swirling around the jar.  As well, above the feathers in two sections are cloud patterns and two are rain patterns.  It is a style that is distinctive to his pottery.  The jar is from 1986, so very early in his career.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
