Gutierrez, Denny – Water Jar with with Avanyu (1988)
Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls. However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This water jar has a low, wide shoulder and an elongated neck. In all the years of both working with Denny and having pieces come back into the gallery, this is the first time I’ve seen one of his water serpent designs. It is an interesting variation with feather and wave patterns. Around the neck of the jar is a rain and cloud pattern. The jar is perfectly polished to a high shine and fired black. It is from 1988. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
