Lela Gutierrez began making pottery in the 1930’s with her husband, Van Gutierrez.  After Van passed away in 1956 she continued to make pottery with her son, Luther Gutierrez. This open bowl is distinctive in both its shape and the designs.  The bowl has twisted handles and it is painted with various clay slips on the inside. The use of the blue clay slip is more indicative of work from the 1930s.  There are stylized avanyu on the edge along with corn plants and detailed ears of corn.  There is exceptional detail on the ears of corn in the center and the feathers in the design on the rim. The twisted handles are slipped a deep red.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  There is some missing slip which can be seen in the photos and is typical of the age.
