Gutierrez, Lois – Polychrome Water Jar with Hummingbirds

7.5"w x 9.5"h

$ 1,100.00

This is an intricately painted water jar by Lois Gutierrez.  She is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara.  Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This is a water jar shape with a wide shoulder and an elongated neck. What you can’t quite see is that there is a sharp edge at the shoulder which just slightly dips down before going up to the next.  It is a tactile part of the jar and its elegant coil construction.  There are four hummingbirds around the neck.  Below the shoulder are flowers.  The rim of the neck has a “four-direction” design.  The jar is was made in 1995 and it is traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lois”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
