Gutierrez, Lois – Red, Tan, and Polychrome Water Jar with Bear Paws (1986)
This is a stunning large water jar by Lois Gutierrez. It is from 1986. It is a double shoulder water jar with bear paws. The inside of the rim is polished tan, the natural color of the clay. The outside of the jar is polished red and there are two large bear paws impressed into the clay. Below the shoulder, the jar is matte and painted with clay slips. There are four different colors of clay used for this pattern. The jar has a water and lightning pattern painted in polychrome colorations. It is tightly painted and flows across the surface of the jar with ten swirls of design. The contrasts of the polished and matte surfaces on such a large jar are part of its visual strength. It is signed on the bottom, “Lois 1986”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
