Gutierrez, Margaret & Luther – Jar with Avanyu and Handles (1970s)
This is a classic jar by Margaret & Luther Gutierrez. Margaret would make the pottery and her brother Luther would paint the designs using natural clay slips. This jar has large avanyu (water serpents) on either side. They are painted with a variety of clay colors. Extending off the neck are two handles, which turn into “hands” on the side of the piece. I remember meeting Margaret Gutierrez many times when I was younger and I just imagine how she would laugh at the “joke” of there being “hand”-handles. She had a great laugh! All the various colors are from natural clay slips and this was a signature style of their work. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Margaret / Luther”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
