Gutierrez, Margaret & Luther – Polychrome Box with Koshari Lid (1970’s)

2.5"long x 2"w x 2.5"h (w/lid)

$ 450.00

This is an unusual box by Margaret and Luther Gutierrez.  They were known for their polychrome pottery (that is, using more than three different colors of clay slips).  This box is painted with avanyu and cloud designs on the sides.  The lid has a koshari clown (with corn husk hair) and there are four images painted on the lid of the box (a fish, turtle, hummingbird and person).  Typically Margaret would have made the piece and Luther, her brother, would have painted it.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret/Luther”.
