This is a classic polychrome turtle is by Margaret Gutierrez.  After her brother, Luther passed away, Margaret both made and painted the pottery.  This turtle is fully painted with carved squares on the back for the “shell”.  Each of the 22 squares is painted with a different design, from figures to insects.  The face is whimsical, much in the manner of her other pottery.  All of the colors are from natural clay slips.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret”.
