WOW!  This is an extraordinary large seedpot by Art Cody Haungooah.  it is from 1984. It is this intricate style of his later work for which he began to achieve much acclaim. The seedpot is nearly flat on top and very highly polished.  On the top is a large Mimbres style ram with a small deer on its head.  This is an image that is from a famous Mimbres bowl from the 1100s.  The ram is highlighted with red, white, and green clay slips. There are inset shell hei-shi beads for the eyes.  On the side of the seedpot is a very intricately etched section.  There are large bear paws etched and slipped red.  The is a small stylized flute player with pollen and an inset shell hei-shi bead. Note the very delicately etched feathers and cloud designs.  There are also some matte areas that are etched in various depths and styles.  The remainder of the seedpot has white etched “dots” which were meant to be star and star formations.  They sit in the field of highly polished black.  One thing to note about this piece is not just the detail in the etched designs, but the restraint in not filling up the entire piece.  The negative open space draws the eye to the design and the colorations.  The highly polished surface reflects both the viewer and the area around the piece.  There is sophisticated artistry in this single clay vessel.  The seedpot is signed, “A.  H.”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Definitely an important piece of his art and history!
