Haungooah, Art Cody – “A Vision” Bowl (1978)

3.5"w x 3.75"h

$ 900.00

This is a larger and unusual bowl by Art Cody Haungooah.  The top and bottom sections are polished red while the center section is polished brown.  Interestingly, while the red is the classic slip used for that color, the brown is the slip used for firing the pieces black! There is a grasshopper as the primary design on the bowl.  It is surrounded by a swirling feather pattern which encircles the entire jar.  Projecting away from the grasshopper are additional cloud and rain designs in the brown clay color.  The bowl has a striking contrast of color as well as how he has used the matte area to enhance the polished designs.  Insects are often a theme in Art’s pottery.  This piece is also one of his few titled vessels, with the name of, “A Vision”.  It was made a year before he was invited to France by Pierre Cardin to show his pottery.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
