Herrera, Laurencita – Canteen with Three Kids (1974)
Laurencita Herrera (1912-1984) is the matriarch of a family of renowned potters. Her daughters include Seferina Ortiz and Mary Francis Herrera. Her grandchildren include Virgil Ortiz and his sisters, Janice, Inez, and Joyce Ortiz. She created an amazing legacy at Cochiti that continues to this day. This piece combines classic Cochiti forms with the popularity of storytellers in the early 1970’s. It is a classic canteen with a cloud, rain, and plant design on one side. On the top near the neck are three kids, each painted differently. The piece is slipped with white clay and then painted with a red clay slip and wild spinach (black). It is signed on the bottom, ‘Laurencita Herrera”. It was traditionally fired and it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Definitely a classic by this historically important Cochiti potter!
