Herrera, Laurencita – Large Bird Effigy Pitcher (1960s)
Laurencita Herrera (1912-1984) is the matriarch of a family of renowned potters. Her daughters include Seferina Ortiz and Mary Francis Herrera. Her grandchildren include Virgil Ortiz and his sisters, Janice, Inez, and Joyce Ortiz. She created an amazing legacy at Cochiti that continues to this day. This piece combines classic Cochiti forms with the historic effigy pieces from the Cochiti past. It is a striking combination of a bird as a pitcher. The bird is painted with bee-weed (black) and there is a cloud and corn design on the front. The wings are stylized using plant patterns and there are round clouds around the neck. The piece was traditionally fired and it is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair. There is one small area of spalling on the handle. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Laurencita Herrera”. Definitely a classic by this historically important potter!
