Huma, Rosetta – Large Corrugated Jar with Handles (1950’s)

11.5"w x 7"h

$ 575.00

Rosetta Huma was from Sichomovi on First Mesa, Hopi. She was the mother of Wilfred Huma and the former mother-in-law of Rondina Huma. She began making pottery in the 1950s.  This is one of the few pieces of her pottery we have had in the gallery.  The piece is a large jar that is fully polished.  It is corrugated around the shoulder with a triangular design.  The handles are attached on the side and impressed.  The piece was traditionally fired to create the striking fire clouds on the surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Rosetta Huma”.  Surprisingly, for its age and unique form, it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is certainly a wonderful piece of Hopi pottery history!
