Violet Huma is one of a group of potters from Second Mesa at Hopi who began making pottery in the 1960s and ’70s. The forms were often more traditional shapes, such as this large open bowl. It is painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slips and native fired. Note the beautiful coloration of the bowl from the traditional firing. The bowl is painted around the outside and also on the inside. The interior is a stylized bird on the horizon. It is intricately painted and traditionally fired to create dynamic fire clouds. The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Violet Huma” and is a late piece from 1982.
